The first snow of the season falls on the mountains

The first snow has fallen in Colorado's high mountains.

Meteorologists from the National Weather Service confirmed on Thursday that light dusting on the mountains west of Denver, including Rocky Mountain National Park. Snow also lay on the summit of Pikes Peak west of Colorado Springs.

Arapahoe Basin, Keystone, Breckenridge and Copper Mountain all recorded snow on the upper portions of their ski mountains, as did Summit County's higher peaks, including Quandary Peak. A-Basin and Keystone are vying to be the first Colorado ski area to open for the season, aiming for first runs in October.

According to meteorologists, snow fell in the mountains to an altitude of only 3,300 meters above sea level. However, with temperatures rising, the snow will not stay for long.

Temperatures are expected to remain above 70 degrees on Thursday as thunderstorms moved across the Front Range in the morning, mostly south of Interstate 70.

Meteorologists predicted warmer weather for the weekend with maximum temperatures around 32 degrees Celsius.
