Rare, previously unreleased footage of the assassination of John F. Kennedy is being auctioned

New, previously unseen footage of the assassination of former President John F. Kennedy – reportedly showing the horrific moments immediately after the assassination as his limousine races toward Parkland Memorial Hospital – is set to go to auction later this month.

RR Auctions will auction the 40-second footage on September 28. According to the auction house, the rare footage is currently being offered for $12,100.

The footage was shot on 8mm color film by Dale Carpenter Sr., a truck driver using a home video camera, according to the auction house. Much of the footage shows the presidential motorcade traveling down Lemmon Avenue toward Dealey Plaza.

Unfortunately, however, Carpenter missed the presidential limousine carrying the President and First Lady Jackie Kennedy and quickly moved to another location at the end of the parade route on the North Stemmons Freeway, part of Interstate 35. From this roadside position, Carpenter was able to capture footage of Kennedy's limousine speeding toward Parkland Memorial Hospital at 80 miles per hour.

The footage shows Secret Service agent Clint Hill jumping into the back seat of the limousine after the president was shot, still clinging to the car as it sped down the highway. Hill later published his own memoir about the assassination in 2013. Five days in November, and an upcoming documentary about him will reportedly include clips of the footage.

After 10 seconds of footage from I-35, the home video reel abruptly switches to footage of a toddler playing with a toy dump truck.

The most famous footage of the assassination is probably the Zapruder film, also shot by Abraham Zapruder on a silent 8mm home video camera, which shows the moment Kennedy is hit by a bullet as the limousine drives through Dealey Plaza.

Carpenter died in 1991 and the footage is being sold by his grandson James Gates, the Associated Press reported. Gates, who found the film in a milk crate, told the news agency that he was initially not impressed by the footage on Lemmon Avenue, but found the later footage of the drive to the hospital “shocking.”

The auction house has released some clips and stills of the footage, but not the entire stretch along I-35. Potential buyers can schedule an appointment with the auction house to preview the footage, according to the film listing.
