Caitlin Clark's comments cause controversy with Sheryl Swoopes and Nancy Lieberman

Caitlin Clark has been the subject of much discussion this year. However, what has attracted the most attention is WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes' statement about the Indiana Fever star.

Swoopes has spoken about Clark on numerous occasions and has even been called a Caitlin Clark hater by some fans. Nancy Lieberman, a former professional basketball player who coached in the WNBA and NBA, was on the “Stephen A. Smith Show” to talk about Swoopes and Clark.

Who is Sheryl Swoopes?

Sheryl Swoopes is a four-time WNBA champion and three-time MVP who played for the Houston Comets, Seattle Storm and Tulsa Shock. A 2016 Naismith Hall of Fame inductee, she was also a six-time WNBA All-Star and three-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year. She averaged 15.0 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 12 seasons.

Swoopes has also worked for ESPN, SEC Network and the Longhorn Network as a co-commentator and live commentator.

Swoopes had already made negative comments about Caitlin Clark in a podcast with Gilbert Arenas before the WNBA season. Here's a look at the comments, for which Swoopes apologized due to some inaccuracies:

“Caitlin Clark probably shoots about 40 times a game right now (and) when she comes into the league, she probably won't get to 40 shots a game, no matter what team with experienced players.”
“Kelsey Plum set that record in four years. Well, Caitlin should have broken that record in four years. But because there's a COVID year and then another year, and – you know what I mean? She already had an extra year to break that record. So is it really a broken record? I don't know. I don't think so. But yeah, that's going to go down in the record books… and I don't think it should.”

The inaccuracies? Clark didn't even come close to making 40 shots per game (she averaged 20.1 attempts per game during her Iowa career) and she only played four years of college basketball. The same number as Plum.

What did Sheryl Swoopes say about Caitlin Clark?

Sheryl Swoopes was on the Queens of the Court podcast with Jordan Robinson in July and claimed Caitlin Clark was not as deserving of the WNBA Rookie of the Year Award as Chicago Sky's Angel Reese, but added that Indiana would be a playoff team even without Clark. Here's what Swoopes said:

“I think Caitlin (Clark) did exactly what was expected of her at Indiana. The reason they drafted her. What the expectations were, and I think she did exactly that.”
“Is Indiana in the playoffs now without Caitlin? … When you look at the entire team, the individual players that they have, there's no doubt that Indiana has better players from top to bottom than Chicago. There's no doubt about that.”

What did Nancy Lieberman say about Caitlin Clark and Sheryl Swoopes?

During the conversation with Stephen A. Smith, Lieberman said she called Sheryl Swoopes to talk to her about the situation with Caitlin Clark.

“Facts are important,” Lieberman said. “If you get ahead of the game and say, 'Hey, I made a mistake on my numbers,' then the matter is over and everyone respects you for your opinion. … Well, she was mad at me on the phone.”

Lieberman said her relationship with Swoopes “is pretty much not working right now.”

“My life will be good with or without Sheryl Swoopes,” Lieberman said.

Swoopes responded on social media: “My life is good without you (and him).”
