Secondary school

Last night at high school volleyball…

  • Houghton defeated Jeffers in an incredibly close game 3-2 (24-26, 25-23, 24-26, 25-18, 15-13). For the Gremlins, Chloe Serafin scored 14 kills, 8 blocks and 21 digs, Sophie Hebert 11 kills, Laney Johnson 41 assists and 31 digs and Emmy Pietila 41 digs. Mia Nordstrom led the Jets with 20 kills and 4 blocks. Kloe Verran scored 40 digs and Liz Halonen 20 assists.
  • Ewen-Trout Creek defeated Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-19). Kiera Isaacson had 8 kills and 20 digs for the Blue Bolts and Macy Jurgenson had 8 assists.
  • L'Anse stopped Westwood 3-0.

In cross country, Houghton won his own Bill Fezzy Memorial Invitational yesterday.

  • The boys earned a close team victory over Jeffers. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City finished third, followed by Ironwood, Gogebic and Hancock. Chassell's Kalvin Kytta took first place individually. Birk Seagren and Benjamin Hemmer of the Gremlins took second and third, and Cameron Anderson and Landon Larson of the Jets took fourth and fifth.
  • The girls easily outran Hancock, with all five Gremlin runners finishing in the top 12. Ewen-Trout Creek finished third, followed by Calumet, Ironwood, Chassell and Gogebic. The Gremlins' Tessa Rautiola took individual honors, with Roman Trevino Peterlin third, Sela Niska fourth and Lily Ross fifth. Ella Keranen was Hancock's best runner, finishing in sixth place.

  • Calumet travels to Westwood. Coverage begins at 6:40 a.m. on Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
  • Hancock travels to Menominee.
  • L'Anse is set in West Iron County.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell travels to Munising.
  • Ontonagon plays at Rapid River.

The Hancock softball team will be holding a bottle drive tomorrow from 9 a.m. to noon. Bring your donations to Hancock Bottling on Birch Street near the Driving Park.

College Football

Michigan Tech's football team defeated South Dakota Mines 52-50 last night in an epic four-overtime game. In the longest game the Huskies have ever played, Alex Fries passed for a school-record 471 yards and five touchdowns. Ethan Champney caught 10 of those passes for 277 yards. The Hardrockers took an early 21-0 lead, but the score was tied 35-35 at the end of regulation. Both teams scored touchdowns on extra points in the first overtime and two-point conversions in the second. Neither team scored in the third overtime, as two-point conversions alternated throughout the overtime period. After Fries caught a pass from Champney in the fourth overtime, Hunter Buechel deflected a South Dakota Mines pass in the end zone to secure the win.

The Northern Michigan football team lost to Kentucky Wesleyan 33-13.

College Football

The MTU soccer team opened its season last night with a 1-0 win at Saint Cloud State. Reilly Lovercheck scored the goal and Bri Barrows secured the win as goalie.

The Huskies play in Minnesota Duluth tomorrow.

The NMU men's soccer team defeated Northwood 1-0 yesterday.

The North women's soccer team defeated Minnesota-Duluth 6-1 last night.

The women's team plays at Saint Cloud State tomorrow.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team is in Golden, Colorado for the Oredigger Classic. They face Regis this afternoon and Gennon tonight. Tomorrow they face Colorado Mesa and Colorado School of Mines.

Northern's volleyball team is in Mankato for the Minnesota State tournament. They play Minnesota State Moorhead this morning and Truman State tonight. Tomorrow they face Upper Iowa and Minnesota State.

MLB

Parker Meadows' two-out, full-count grand slam in the ninth inning gave the Tigers a 4-3 win over the Padres last night.

The Tigers visit the Athletics tonight. Tarik Skubal will face Mitch Spence. Since 99.3 The Lift is carrying Packers football, we will be watching the Tigers game after Calumet High School football on KBear 102.3.

The Brewers had yesterday off and will host the Rockies tonight. Frankie Montas will pitch against Ryan Feltner.

NFL

In yesterday’s NFL opening game, the Chiefs beat the Ravens 27-20.

The Packers begin their NFL season today with an unusual Friday night game against the Eagles in São Paulo, Brazil. Coverage begins at 7:30 a.m. on 99.3 The Lift.

The Lions start their season on Sunday evening at home against the Rams. Kickoff is at 8:20 a.m. on 99.3 The Lift.
