Elton John’s eye infection caused “limited vision” for the EGOT winner

Elton John has to announce unfortunate news about his health.

“Over the summer I struggled with a severe eye infection which has unfortunately left me with limited vision in one eye. I am on the mend but it is an extremely slow process and it will take some time for vision to return in the affected eye,” the singer wrote in a statement shared on his social media accounts on Tuesday.

“I am so grateful to the amazing medical and nursing team and my family for taking such good care of me over the last few weeks,” continued John, 77. “I have spent the summer at home recovering and am confident in the progress I have made so far in my healing and recovery.”

Well-wishers included tennis legend Billie Jean King, “Ted Lasso” star Hannah Waddingham and songwriter and creative partner Bernie Taupin. “We send you our love and support. Get well soon, friend,” King wrote.

Taupin chimed in, “Get back on track, good mate,” and Waddingham added, “Sending you golden healing vibes, Elton.”

In March, John and Taupin were honored with the Library of Congress' Gershwin Prize for Popular Song for their nearly 60-year musical partnership. Paul McCartney is the only other British artist to receive the award.

Elton John, EGOT winner, has undergone hip surgery and knee replacement in recent years

John capped off his final tour last summer with a performance in Stockholm, where he described his career as “52 years of pure joy.”

“I'm trying to process this and I think it's going to take a while for me to realize that I'm finally done touring,” John said in a statement to USA TODAY last year. “I can't tell you how much I'm going to miss the fans and how humbled I've been by their support – that will stay with me forever.”
