Who did Lee Corso pick today? College GameDay Headwear Picks for Week 2

Fresh from his first appearance on the College Game Day In Week 1, Lee Corso is back and ready to make another selection in Week 2 when the team heads to Ann Arbor to take part in a battle between two of college football's heavyweights, No. 10 Michigan and No. 4 Texas.

Corso, 89, was an analyst at College Game Day on the air since its first season in 1987. And over the years, the former college and professional football coach with 28 years of experience on the sidelines has become as familiar a part of a Saturday morning as a cup of coffee and a hot breakfast.

College Game Day The show initially aired from an ESPN studio, but in 1993, as it does today, it was broadcast to various schools. That's when the show really took off, with fanatical college football fans holding up funny signs and many well-known personalities contributing their analysis.

But Corso is the shining star of College Game DayAs part of the show's grand finale, with the host school's fans roaring in his ears, Corso makes his pick for the week's game, building up excitement over his selection and then announcing it by donning an oversized mascot head or football helmet – to the delight or outrage of the crowd behind him.

It's excellent and highly entertaining television. There's simply no better way to start your Saturday if you're a college football fan.

If you want to know what Corso picked for the Michigan-Texas game, how the selection turned out, or anything in between, then this article is for you. First, let's dive into the matchup.

Featured Game of the Week: No. 4 Texas vs. No. 10 Michigan

Two college football heavyweights are battling it out in Ann Arbor! Both teams are fresh off of last year's College Football Playoff, where Michigan won its first national championship since 1997. But while each of these teams looks a little different in 2024, the results for both were largely the same in Week 1.

No. 10 Michigan now has Jim Harbaugh's successor, Sherrone Moore, as the program's new head coach and former walk-on quarterback Davis Warren on the sidelines at quarterback. In the duo's first game of the 2024 season, the Wolverines struggled in the first half before pulling away in the second to post a (more or less) stress-free 30-10 win over Fresno State. But now comes the real test.

A talented Texas team (with the same coach-QB duo (Steve Sarkisian and Quinn Ewers) that led the program to the playoffs) comes to Ann Arbor fresh off a 52-0 loss to Colorado State.

Ewers, a former Ohio State transfer, made headlines at SEC Media Days in July when he referred to Michigan as “That Team Up North,” a common Buckeyes talking point. Force of habit or intentional jibe? It's not clear, but it might just give the Wolverines a little more momentum on the road.

In the bigger picture, the game certainly has implications for the rest of the season. Texas would all but secure its spot in the expanded College Football Playoff with a win, while Michigan, which still has games against top-25 teams USC, Oregon and Ohio State on its schedule, could boost its College Football Playoff hopes with a decisive home win against a non-conference power.

Now let’s delve into the story of Corso with these two blue bloods.

Lee Corso's previous tips for Michigan, Texas

Corso brings an impressive career record of 276-139 to Saturday's show. This will be Michigan's 40th appearance on College Game Day, the third most of any team. Corso has selected 30 games involving Michigan and has a 20-10 record in those contests.

This is now the Longhorns’ 22nd appearance on College Game Day. Corso has selected 21 of those games involving the Longhorns and has a record of 12-9.

Michigan and Texas have met only once in college football history, in the 2005 Rose Bowl, one of the greatest bowl games of all time. Longhorns star Vince Young defeated then-Michigan freshman Chad Henne to lead Texas to a 38-37 victory.

On Saturday, Corso tipped a game between Texas and Michigan for the first time and he did not disappoint.

The moment of truth

Like a quarterback in a hostile environment, Corso silenced the Gameday editorial team and then set the perfect stage for his possible selection of Michigan.

“Michigan has won 23 games in a row here at Michigan Stadium,” Corso said. “Michigan has the longest winning streak in the nation with 16 wins.”

Then Corso paused before saying the next sentence.

Corso’s chosen team

“It's the perfect place for Texas to beat them,” Corso said as he donned the headgear of Bevo, the Longhorns' beloved mascot, and performed the school's signature “Hook 'Em Horns” celebration.

It was a memorable pick from Corso, as the College Gameday star even hit celebrity tipster Michael Phelps with his signature line, “Not so fast.”

Corso is 1-0 this season. He correctly predicted that Notre Dame would beat Texas A&M on the road last week, and the Fighting Irish did indeed pull off a 23-13 victory.
