Former Clemson wide receiver Diondre Overton dies at 26 | Clemson Tigers Sports

CLEMSON — Former Clemson receiver Diondre Overton has died. He was 26.

The Clemson football program confirmed the news in a post on Twitter on Sept. 7, but the cause of death was not disclosed.

Overton's career spanned from 2016 to 2019 and saw him be a member of the Tigers' national championship teams in 2016 and 2018.

“Clemson football and the entire Clemson family mourns the passing of Clemson alumnus Diondre Overton. Our thoughts are with his family and friends,” the football program said in a post.

Overton, a Greensboro native, finished his college career with 52 catches for 777 yards and seven touchdowns. In his senior season, Overton received the Leather Helmet Award as MVP of Clemson's victory over Boston College, recording three catches for 119 yards and three touchdowns.

After going undrafted in 2020, the 6'4″ and 215-pound receiver played several times in the CFL, USFL and UFL. He most recently played the 2024 spring season with the UFL's Memphis Showboats.

News of Overton's death reached his former teammates at Clemson on the morning of September 7, and they began posting condolences on social media.

“Life isn't fair man!!!” former Clemson receiver Amari Rodgers posted to X. “Please tell your loved ones you love them because you never know… Long live Dre.”

“I love you to death, man,” former Clemson and current Arizona Cardinals defensive end Xavier Thomas posted on Overton's Instagram. “I'll do anything for you, buddy. Fly high.”

Clemson is scheduled to play its first home game on September 7 against Appalachian State.

“Words cannot express the (sadness) we all feel today,” wrote former Clemson receivers coach Jeff Scott. “Dre was a special young man with a bright smile that always lit up the room. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and former teammates.”
