Chicago White Sox vs. Boston Red Sox: Match report, recap and team stats – September 6, 2024 Gametracker

BOSTON (AP) Ceddanne Rafaela hit a decisive two-run homer against the Green Monster in the seventh inning and the Boston Red Sox inflicted their 110th loss of the season on the Chicago White Sox, 3-1, on Friday night.

Triston Casas scored the other run with a single in the fourth inning for the Red Sox, who ended a season-high five straight losses and stumbled in the race for the third and final AL wild-card spot with a record of 6-10 in their final 16 games.

“That was great for the team, helping the team. That was pretty good,” said Rafaela, who hit a slider on the first pitch after a 12-pitch walk in front of him. “I was just looking for the best pitch I could get.”

Jacob Amaya hit an RBI single for the White Sox, who are now 32-110 and on pace to surpass the New York Mets' record of 120 losses set in 1962, the most in a season since 1900. They lost for the 13th time in 14 games after beating Baltimore on Wednesday.

Chicago also lost for the 43rd time this season after scoring first and fell to 5-39 since the All-Star break.

The White Sox (0-14) have not won a series since the break.

Rafaela hit his 15th batter against Matt Foster (0-1) into the second row of Monster seats, where a fan stood up and made a beautiful barehanded catch after Enmanuel Valdez's walk.

Zack Kelly (6-2) threw a scoreless inning to secure the win. Josh Winckowski got the last three outs and thus his first save of the season.

White Sox starter Davis Martin and Boston's Nick Pivetta each pitched six strong innings. Martin allowed one run on three hits, struck out three, allowed one walk and struck out three batters. Pivetta allowed one run, five hits, six strikeouts and three walks.

“We defended well behind him and he gave us a chance to win,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said of Pivetta.

Martin allowed Casas' single after catching two batters in a row off guard with breaking pitches.

“Ultimately, our goal is to get down there. They call it back-foot sliders or back-foot curves for a reason, sometimes they hit a back foot,” he said. “Today was just one of those days. … I'm not unhappy with the execution at all.”

TRAINING ROOM

White Sox: OF Luis Robert Jr. was back in the lineup after leaving the last game with a strained right hamstring. … RHP Drew Thorpe underwent surgery to remove a bone spur in his right elbow that ended his season. He is expected to return to spring training in February without restrictions.

Red Sox: CF Jarren Duran drew a foul on a pitch that bounced straight up and to the side of his left ear, but he stayed in the game. … Cora said there was “a good chance” infielder Trevor Story could finish his rehab assignment and start at shortstop Saturday. His return comes after season-ending shoulder surgery on April 12. Recovery time is estimated at six months.

LHP Garrett Crochet (6-10, 3.61 ERA) is scheduled to face Red Sox RHP Cooper Criswell (5-4, 4.14) on Saturday night.
