Colorado State Patrol officer injured in shooting; suspect killed

A Colorado State Patrol officer was injured Saturday afternoon when he was shot in his patrol car in Westminster, the agency said.

The police officer shot the suspect, who died at the scene, the press release said. The suspect has not yet been publicly identified.

The shooting occurred at approximately 1:18 p.m. The officer was parked in the median of U.S. 36, west of Federal Blvd., when a car drove by and fired several shots at him. One bullet struck the officer, according to the news release.

The driver of the car then pulled onto the shoulder, the suspect got out and again began shooting at the patrol car's windshield. The officer then got out of his car and fired back at the shooter, the release said.

The police officer was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the press release said.

According to the press release, US 36 is closed while police investigate.
