Shooting in Laurel County: Officials confirm five shots fired

LONDON, Ky. (WYMT) – UPDATE: City of London Mayor Randall Weddle confirmed to WYMT that there were five victims in the shooting.

UPDATE: Officials with the Laurel County Sheriff's Office have confirmed that I-75 is reopened in both directions.

They are warning people to proceed with caution as Couch, the person they are looking for, has not been found.

UPDATE: Officials with the Laurel County Sheriff's Office are searching for a person of interest in connection with the shooting that occurred Saturday on I-75 at Exit 49 and KY-909.

According to officials, 32-year-old Joseph A. Couch is a suspect.

He is described as white, 1.78 m tall and weighing about 70 kg.

Couch is considered armed and dangerous.

Officials urge people not to approach him. If you have any information, contact the London-Laurel County 911 Center at 911 or 606-878-7000.

UPDATE: Gilbert Acciardo of the Laurel County Sheriff's Office confirmed to WYMT that there are several serious injuries but no confirmed deaths as of 8:08 p.m.

The shooter has still not been caught and residents are being asked to stay in their homes.

ORIGINAL STORY: City of London Mayor Randall Weddle confirmed to WYMT that a shooting is underway in London.

Trooper Scottie Pennington of Kentucky State Police Post 11 confirmed that the suspect has still not been caught.

Shots were fired on I-75 near exit 49.

The Laurel County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that multiple people were shot.

Les Dixon, media liaison for the Kentucky Department of Transportation's 11th District, said I-75, as well as KY 909 and US 25 in Laurel County, are currently closed.

I-75 is closed from exit 41 to exit 59.
