Oregon 37-34 Boise State (September 7, 2024) Match Report

EUGENE, Ore. — Atticus Sappington kicked a 25-yard field goal as time expired to give No. 7 Oregon a 37-34 victory over resilient Boise State on Saturday night.

Dillon Gabriel threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns for the Ducks (2-0), who struggled against the Broncos but extended their non-conference home winning streak to 34 games – the best of any active team nationally.

Ashton Jeanty ran for 192 yards and three touchdowns for Boise State, which led 20-14 at halftime but lost momentum after Oregon scored two touchdowns in the third quarter to take the lead.

The Broncos (1-1) took the lead again at 34-27 early in the fourth quarter thanks to Jeanty's 8-yard touchdown run, but Noah Whittington managed a 99-yard kickoff return that Jayden Limar recovered in the end zone and tied the score 16 seconds later.

Boise State took an early lead on Jonah Dalmas' field goal in the first quarter. Oregon's offense sputtered at the start, but Gabriel hit Evan Stewart on a 67-yard pass and then scored on a keeper.

Jeanty ran for a 3-yard touchdown early in the second quarter before Dillon Stewart hit a 34-yard touchdown pass to give Oregon a 14-10 lead.

The Broncos took the lead on Maddux Madsen's 17-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Camper. They also kicked a 20-yard field goal and led 20-14 at halftime.

The Ducks began the season ranked third in the AP Top 25, but fell to seventh after a disappointing 24-14 win over Idaho in the opening game.

The Ducks' offensive line problems seemed to persist against Boise State. Gabriel was sacked four times in the first half alone, including on Oregon's first series. The line was reshuffled several times during the game.

Boise State safety Alexander Teubner was ejected for targeting early in the third quarter. On the same drive, Gabriel passed to Traeshon Holden, who sprinted down the field unchallenged and scored a 59-yard touchdown. Oregon missed the extra point and tied the score at 20-20.

Tez Johnson gave the Ducks a 27-20 lead with an 85-yard punt return, but Jeanty tied it with a 70-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter after Boise State recovered an Oregon fumble.

Last season, Jeanty scored 19 touchdowns (14 passing and five running) and averaged 159.7 all-purpose yards per game, second-best in the nation. He rushed for 267 yards and six touchdowns, both school records, in Boise State's season-opening win over Georgia Southern.

Jeanty's 8-yard run gave Boise State a brief lead with 10:15 left before Limar's touchdown recovery tied the score.

The Broncos had won the three previous meetings with Oregon, the last of which took place in 2017.

The conclusion

Boise State: Boise State was tipped to win the Mountain West Conference in the preseason, and the team played well against the Ducks. … Offensive lineman Roger Carreon injured his left leg in the first quarter and was carried off the field. … The Broncos have never beaten a Big Ten team.

Oregon: The Ducks entered the game as favorites with an 18.5-point lead. But it was the second game in which they struggled. … Former Duck Payton Pritchard, who won an NBA title with the Boston Celtics, was among those watching the game.

Next

Boise State: A week off before playing Portland State on September 21.

Oregon: Saturday is an away game against rival Oregon State. The game was originally scheduled to take place on Thanksgiving weekend, but the Ducks left the Pac-12 this season and moved to the Big Ten.
