DP World Tour: Englishman Matt Wallace remains four strokes ahead before the final day of the Omega European Masters | Golf News

Matt Wallace moved a step closer to ending his six-year winless streak on the DP World Tour by maintaining his four-stroke lead ahead of the final round of the Omega European Masters.

After bogey-free rounds in the first two days, Wallace scored a score of three over par and 73 strokes in windy conditions at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club on Saturday. Although he fell to eleven under par, he maintained his clear lead over his closest rival Alfredo Garcia-Heredia.

Andrew “Beef” Johnson goes into the final day in third place with Henrik Norlander, while Edoardo Molinari, with a 69 in the round of the day, put the Ryder Cup vice-captain in joint fifth place with Alex Fitzpatrick.

Wallace won the PGA Tour last season but won his most recent of four DP World Tour titles at the 2018 Made In Denmark. A win this week would put him at the top of the early qualifying round in the race to qualify for next year's Ryder Cup.

How Wallace stayed ahead in Switzerland

Wallace missed par from 10 feet on the second hole and dropped another shot on the fourth. A bogey on the par-3 eighth dropped him to three over par for the day and reduced his lead from the day before to one.

The Englishman responded by sinking a 25-foot birdie on the par-5 ninth hole, but had to hole out from 8 feet on the next hole to escape with just a bogey. However, he remained three shots ahead when he converted from 15 feet on the 13th hole to save par.

Wallace needed two long-range putts to take advantage of the par-5 14th hole, but he bogeyed the next par-5 to drop to 11 under par. He then recovered from his failure to get up and down and save par on the 17th hole by holing the 18th hole and ending his eventful round with a birdie.

“Where do I start?” Wallace told Sky Sports: when asked to rate the difficulty of the conditions. “Brutal, tough. Really tough. I hit the ball, felt just as good, hit my areas – they were the wrong areas, it looked like. Some holes like 17 were potentially impossible.”

“I said the other day that it was cold and windy, but this (today) was crazy, this was crazy. The greens were fantastic, but also really fast.”

Matt Wallace double-chipped in as many holes in his second round in Switzerland, where he shot a bogey-free 62.

Englishman Jordan Smith was nine strokes behind the leader after a 77, which included a two-stroke penalty for a wrong drop on the par-5 12th hole. A bogey-6 turned into a triple-bogey-8, and Smith also lost four strokes on the last three holes.

Matt Fitzpatrick, who entered the week aiming to win the event for the third time, bogeyed his first three holes and struggled to a five-over 75, dropping to a tie for 65th place.
