The cult classic The Goonies is set to get a long-awaited sequel, with several original cast members expected to return. According to a source cited by The Sun, production on the sequel is set to begin in summer 2025, with a release planned for 2026 or 2027. The project has been in development for years, and discussions about a follow-up film were ongoing for some time before it was officially given the green light.

“The Goonies reboot has been talked about for a long time, but now they've finally been given the green light to move forward,” the insider revealed. “The team is excited about the opportunity to bring the magic of the original film to new audiences.”

The original Goonies, directed by Richard Donner and produced by Steven Spielberg, was released in 1985 and became a cultural phenomenon. The film followed a group of friends on a treasure hunt and starred Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen and Ke Huy Quan. The upcoming sequel is expected to capitalize on the growing popularity of teen adventure films, with Warner Bros. looking to meet fans' high expectations.

The insider also noted that “the market for teen adventure films is booming” and that the film's production team is committed to developing a storyline that will appeal to both longtime fans and new viewers.
