Former Ohio State Buckeyes running back could have a great NFL season in 2024

JK Dobbins' short NFL career has been bumpy so far. Since 2020, the running back has only appeared in 24 games for the Baltimore Ravens.

In his rookie season, Dobbins impressed with 805 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on 134 carries. After playing in 15 games that year, the former Ohio State Buckeyes running back has struggled with serious injuries since then.

While it's easy to write Dobbins off due to his injury history, his landing spot in Los Angeles with the Chargers this offseason is probably as ideal as it gets. Not only is offensive coordinator Greg Roman familiar with Dobbins' game from Baltimore, but former Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh also wants to implement a run-heavy game system.

If Dobbins can stay healthy, he should have a successful comeback season for two reasons.

With Dobbins and Gus Edwards set to play this year, Roman gave some additional insight into the plan ahead of their Week 1 game against the Las Vegas Raiders. The Chargers are looking to stay on the winning track, according to their offensive coordinator.

Edwards is absolutely a force in short yardage, but Dobbins is the more explosive runner of the two players. Edwards can carry the ball first in the game, but Dobbins has the chance to carry the ball more often than Edwards.

In addition to the obvious opportunity for Dobbins, the Chargers certainly have their share of the running game. With 300-pound defensive lineman Scott Matlock at fullback, Los Angeles will be looking to use his size and strength to create running space. That should bode well for Dobbins.

For Ohio State fans, it would be nice to see Dobbins succeed again, but for the fantasy football managers who drafted Dobbins, the upcoming game against the Raiders could be the moment he goes from backup to potential flex option.

This will be something to keep an eye on as Dobbins has a clear path to regain relevance as a running back in the league.
