Meanwhile, members of the Indian diaspora organised protests in 130 cities across 25 countries on Sunday, demanding justice for the doctor-in-training who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata.

In addition, thousands took to the streets in Kolkata at midnight to commemorate the month-old incident on August 9. During the third “Reclaim the Night” protest march, demonstrators formed human chains and demanded justice for the victim.

One of the protesters told news agency ANI: “The Bengal Chief Minister is useless. She is only concerned with saving her post. If we do not get justice, we will stage a bigger protest.”

Latest developments

– The West Bengal government led by Mamata Banerjee has come under fire for “mismanagement” of the case, with opposition parties and activists demanding the chief minister's resignation.

– The victim's parents recently alleged that they were offered bribes by the Kolkata police to cover up the “hasty” cremation of their daughter.

– Jawhar Sircar, a leader of the ruling TMC, resigned as a Rajya Sabha MP, claiming that the party had “failed to respond appropriately” in the doctor's case. The party has also been accused by the BJP, which claims that the ruling party, along with the Kolkata police, was involved in “tampering” with the crime scene.

– The case is currently being investigated by the CBI, which will submit its report to the Calcutta High Court on September 17. They have reportedly narrowed down the prime suspect to Sanjay Roy, a volunteer, after ruling out the possibility of gang rape.
