Yale officer arrested for assault and suspended from police

Roosevelt Cesario Martinez, an officer with the Yale Police Department, was arrested Wednesday in Stratford on a charge of second-degree assault.

A Yale police officer's contract has been suspended after he was arrested in Stratford for second-degree assault.

Lieutenant Roosevelt Cesario Martinez, who has worked for the YPD for over a decade, previous reportingwas arrested by the Stratford Police Department on Wednesday. He was charged with an assault that occurred on Tuesday, according to the Bridgeport Superior Court records.

The News was unable to reach Martinez for comment.

Yale University's Office of Public Affairs and Communications confirmed that Martinez was placed on paid administrative leave, but declined to provide details on when or why his contract was suspended.

“We have nothing further to add,” an OPAC spokesperson wrote to the News.

Martinez was promoted to Sergeant in 2011 and has since been promoted to Lieutenant. In 2015 won the Connecticut Chiefs of Police Association's Medal of Valor and the YPD's Life Saving Medal for his role in rescuing a person who attempted suicide.

Martinez will next appear in court on October 8.
