Kapil Sibal told the Supreme Court that a report by the state health department indicated 23 deaths that were due to the doctors' strike.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal told the Supreme Court on Monday that 23 people had died as a result of the doctors' strike following the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata in August.

Sibal, who is representing West Bengal after the Supreme Court took cognizance of the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor-in-training, said the state government had submitted a status report of the investigation.

The Attorney General, however, said he had not received the report. The bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra examined the report, which was submitted in a sealed cover.

The central government asked the Supreme Court to look into the lack of logistical support by the West Bengal government to the CISF, which is responsible for security at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

In its application, the Union Home Ministry has described the alleged lack of cooperation by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government as an indication of a deeper problem and has asked the state authorities to provide full support to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

Junior doctors have gone on strike demanding justice for the junior doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

The Calcutta High Court handed over the sensitive case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Almost a month after the CBI began its investigation, only one arrest has been made, that of Sanjay Roy.

A CBI official told PTI that the investigation was hampered by a lack of evidence from the crime scene, which made it difficult to link key elements of the case and slowed down the investigation progress.

The central agency said that Dr Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, had ordered the demolition of a toilet and a bathroom near the seminar hall on August 10, a day after the body was found.
