C17 Crime Clips for Monday, September 9

GILLETTE, Wyoming – Here is a summary of notable crimes in and around Gillette this past weekend, taken from police reports from the Gillette Police Department and the Campbell County Sheriff's Office.

Drugs, Sept. 6, North Garner Lake Road, CCSO

Officers stopped a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado at about 8:48 a.m. Friday after recognizing the driver, a 36-year-old man for whom they had a warrant, Undersheriff Quentin Reynolds said. The man was taken into custody and drug containers were spotted in plain sight while officers were moving his vehicle for him. A subsequent search found varying amounts of methamphetamine and marijuana. It was the man's third or subsequent possession incident, so the possession charges became felonies. The man was also charged with driving under the influence and drug use.

Drugs, Sept. 7, Highway 59, GPD

Officers arrested a 22-year-old man for marijuana possession and violating the terms of his probation after they saw him crossing Highway 59 around 1:12 a.m. on Sept. 7, Gillette Assistant Police Chief Brent Wasson said. The man reportedly fled on foot when officers attempted to reach him, but were stopped in the parking lot of a nearby gas station. Officers could smell marijuana and found a marijuana cigarette and cigar paper in the man's back pocket nearby. He was arrested and taken into custody without further incident.

Bar Brawl, September 7, East 2nd Street, GPD

Officers were en route to a bar on East 2nd Street to investigate a reported bar fight in which a 44-year-old man allegedly punched a 58-year-old man in the face around 2:10 a.m. on Sept. 7, Wasson said. The 58-year-old man fell backwards and injured his head, and the 44-year-old man fled shortly afterward. Witnesses said the fight was unprovoked and stemmed from an argument between the two men about dogs. Emergency medical services evaluated the man at the scene and he was taken to the hospital by private vehicle. The 44-year-old man was later contacted by phone and claimed he acted in self-defense. Officers will review video footage and the investigation is ongoing.

Theft, September 7, West Lakeway Road, GPD

A 34-year-old woman called police at 1:07 p.m. on Sept. 7 to report her daughter's backpack had been stolen at Sage Valley Junior High School, Wasson said. The backpack contained $100 worth of personal items and a Campbell County School District Chromebook valued at $350. The woman's daughter believed the backpack had been stolen sometime that afternoon during her cheerleading practice. The investigation is ongoing.

Drugs, Sept. 7, Highway 14-16, GPD

Officers responded to a report of a 44-year-old man who was sending strange text messages about people trying to hurt him at about 1:58 p.m. on Sept. 7 and was headed to a hotel on Highway 14-16, Wasson said. The man showed signs of recent drug use and admitted to using methamphetamine within the past two days. He consented to a search, but officers could not find any evidence and arrested the man for drug use.

DWUI, Sept. 7, West Warlow Drive, GPD

A 31-year-old man was arrested for driving under the influence after he was reported as a drunk driver as he left a bar on North Gurley Avenue around 11:07 p.m., Wasson said. Officers found the man on West Warlow Drive and stopped him for failing to stay in a lane. The 31-year-old man showed signs of intoxication and was arrested after failing a sobriety test. He was charged with not carrying proof of insurance, driving under the influence and failure to stay in a lane.

DWUI, September 8, Skyline Drive, GPD

A 19-year-old man was arrested for drunken driving after officers stopped him in an unregistered 2015 GMC pickup truck near Skyline Drive and Westover Road around 1:46 a.m. on Sept. 8, Wasson said. The man showed signs of intoxication and submitted to a sobriety test. During a search related to his arrest, officers found vape pods on the 19-year-old man. He was charged with drunken driving, possession of tobacco under 21, speeding and false registration.

DWUI, September 9, North Highway 14-16, GPD

Officers arrested a 29-year-old man for driving under the influence after stopping a 2023 Jeep for driving without headlights on North Highway 14-16 at about 2:23 p.m. on Sept. 9, Wasson said. The man showed signs of intoxication and was taken into custody after failing a breathalyzer test.
