Harvey Weinstein was transferred from Rikers Island to the hospital for emergency heart surgery

Harvey Weinstein underwent heart surgery on Monday after complaining of health problems and was transferred from a New York prison to a hospital, a spokesman for the disgraced film mogul said.

Weinstein, whose 2020 rape conviction was overturned in April, is in the intensive care unit at Bellevue Hospital awaiting further test results and details from doctors, spokesman Craig Rothfeld said.

Weinstein, 72, was transferred to the hospital from the Rikers Island jail after complaining that he was not feeling well and had gained a lot of weight due to the medication, Rothfeld said.

He underwent the procedure Monday morning to remove a significant amount of fluid from his lungs and heart, Rothfeld said.

In July, Weinstein was hospitalized for a “myriad of health ailments” and tested positive for Covid-19 and bilateral pneumonia, his spokesman said.

At the time, Weinstein was hospitalized to receive treatment for “the illnesses he continues to suffer from on a daily basis, including diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal stenosis, fluid accumulation in his heart and lungs, and various other ailments,” his spokesman said at the time.

Weinstein was convicted of sex offenses in New York and Los Angeles. In the Los Angeles case, he received a prison sentence of 16 years. In New York, Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years, but the sentence was overturned after a state appeals court found that the judge had erred by allowing women to testify about allegations that were not part of the case.

A grand jury in New York is considering bringing new charges against the former Hollywood executive, a source familiar with the proceedings told NBC News last week.

Weinstein insisted that all sexual encounters were consensual.

Dozens of women – more than 80 – have accused the Oscar-winning producer of sexual assault or harassment.
