Transformational education icon – Alan Shawn Feinstein dies at the age of 93

Alan Shawn Feinstein, the education philanthropist whose mantra was to improve the world by helping one person at a time, died over the weekend at the age of 93, his family said.

In a statement, the Feinstein Foundation said it was a great comfort to know that the foundation would continue to do good work.

Governor McKee said in a statement, “Alan Shawn Feinstein was more than a philanthropist. He was a change agent who invested in the lives and futures of Rhode Island's children. We will always remember him, not only for his impact on education, but for his kind and sincere heart.” The funeral is scheduled for September 21, with memorial services limited to family. However, the funeral will be livestreamed.

Senator Jack Reed called Feinstein “a groundbreaking philanthropist” who has helped countless children.

Mayor Brett Smiley said, “Alan Shawn Feinstein's legacy of generosity, compassion and dedication to education has had a profound impact on our community. His lifelong commitment to supporting and empowering students, families and educators has inspired countless acts of service and will continue to inspire future generations.”
