Catherine's video is a light-hearted contrast to the announcement that she has cancer | Catherine, Princess of Wales

IIt is an intimate portrayal of a seemingly normal family: close, loving, playful. The children climb trees and play cards with their parents and grandparents. Mom and Dad are loving, a little wistful.

But this is no ordinary family. Her father is the heir to the throne; one day her eldest son will be crowned king. She is the Princess of Wales and she is talking about her cancer, which shocked the nation when it was announced earlier this year.

The video – in which Catherine says she has completed preventative chemotherapy and hopes to “stay cancer free” – was filmed in woodland and on a beach near the family's home in Norfolk.

With a strong subliminal message about the beauty and power of nature, Catherine is filmed walking through fields and lying in the sand dunes with her husband.

She is also filmed pushing her youngest son, Louis, on a swing with calming force. The family dog makes a cameo appearance.

She seems relaxed and carefree, enjoying the precious time with her loved ones. But some scenes, particularly one where Catherine is alone leaning against a tree in a beam of light, hint at the “vulnerability” and “stormy waters” she speaks of.

Unlike the video released in March, in which Catherine speaks her cancer diagnosis directly into the camera, in this film the princess speaks off-screen with gentle background music.

The mood is positive and uplifting. As the music builds, the family is filmed looking out over fields – a hopeful future. “Out of the darkness, light can come,” is Catherine's message.

The video was directed by Will Warr, who also shot the Wales family's 10th wedding anniversary video, which also features the family playing on the beach and enjoying the garden of their Norfolk home.

Warr is the owner and creative director of Detail Films, which has produced branded films and creative campaigns for companies such as Gousto, Tesco and McDonald's.
