The symbolism of Kate Middleton’s cancer update video explained

Parts of today's video show Kate at the base of a large tree. While different trees can have different symbolic meanings, trees in a broader sense symbolize life, growth, wisdom, and more.

It is clearly a subject Kate finds meaningful; she was also photographed next to a tree for the image that accompanied another personal message Kate shared in June,

Towards the end of the three-minute video, Kate releases a butterfly – a symbol of hope and transformation. Dictionary of Symbolism notes: “The butterfly has become a metaphor for transformation and hope; across cultures it is a symbol of rebirth and resurrection, of the triumph of the spirit and soul over the physical prison, the material world.” It is a fitting symbol for Kate's triumph over her battle with cancer.

Fern leaves appear throughout the film. Ferns have different symbolisms in different cultures, but some common themes are new life, endurance and resilience.

The princess appears to be wearing a meaningful disc pendant necklace by Daniella Draper, featuring the initials of her three children, Princess Charlotte, Prince George and Prince Louis, as well as diamond stars.

The Wales family often appears in the unifying color blue. Blue – a calming and relaxing color – represents trust and stability. Not surprisingly, Kate and her entire family are dressed in shades for the video.

Can people be symbolic? Maybe! Kate's parents, Carole and Michael, appear briefly in the video – a hint at the support she receives not only from the House of Windsor, but also from her Middleton family.

The last song played in the video is “Ireland” by Ben Winwood. The choice of musician is notable as Winwood is from North Wales, UK – a nod to Kate’s role as Princess of Wales.
