49ers star RB Christian McCaffrey to miss Jets game due to calf and Achilles tendon injury

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey missed his team's Monday night game against the New York Jets due to a calf and Achilles tendon injury. He was listed as inactive just over an hour before kickoff.

The 49ers replaced him with Jordan Mason, who dominated the Jets' defense. The undrafted rookie ran for 147 yards and scored a touchdown in San Francisco's 32-19 win.

McCaffrey's injury limited his practice all week. He was listed as questionable on the team's injury report, but he told the media on Friday he was not concerned about missing Week 1.

McCaffrey has been battling a calf and Achilles injury since August and did not take part in pre-season training before returning to training on Tuesday.

McCaffrey, 28, is a key player in the 49ers' offense. Last season, he carried the ball 272 times for a league-leading 1,459 yards and caught 67 passes for 564 yards. He scored 21 touchdowns for San Francisco in 2023, his first full season with the team after joining in 2022 as a midseason transfer from Carolina.
