Selena Gomez announces she cannot be pregnant for health reasons

Selena Gomez is looking forward to becoming a mother one day. But in a new interview, the singer and actress revealed that she will not be able to experience pregnancy and childbirth due to health complications.

While I was Vanity Fair In a cover story on Monday (September 9), Gomez spoke openly about wanting to start a family with her boyfriend Benny Blanco in the future. However, she says that this is not necessarily [be] just as I imagined it.”

“I never said that,” she told the publication. “But unfortunately I cannot carry children of my own. I have many health problems that would endanger my life and the baby's life. That was something I had to grieve for a while.”

“I thought it would happen like it happens to everyone,” continued Gomez, who has been open about her struggle with lupus since she told her diagnosis to Billboard in 2015. “I feel much better about it. I feel blessed that there are wonderful people who are willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both great options for me.”

“I'm excited to see what that journey will look like, but it will look a little different,” she added. “At the end of the day, I don't care. It will be mine. It will be my baby.”

The interview comes about four months after Blanco – who has been dating the Rare Beauty founder since July 2023 – gushed to Howard Stern that his “next goal” in life is to have children with his girlfriend. “It's a topic of conversation for me every day,” the producer added at the time.

“He can’t lie,” said Gomez Vanity Fair about her boyfriend's revealing appearance on a radio show. “After the interview, I was laughing my head off. Something like: 'Is there anything else you want to get off your chest?'”

“I've never been so loved,” she continued of Blanco. “He was just a light. An absolute light in my life. He's my best friend. I love telling him everything.”

The cover story comes at a busy time for Gomez, who recently rose to the billionaire realm thanks to her makeup business, investments, and music and acting projects, according to a report by Bloomberg. She is currently nominated for an Emmy as Best Actress for her performance in Only murders in the buildingwhose fourth season premiered on August 27, and she is receiving much praise from critics for her role in Jacques Audiard's Emilia Perezwhich will be released on Netflix in November after its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

However, as she reiterated in the interview, her relationships are her biggest priorities right now. “Before I met my boyfriend, I was single for five years, except for a few dates,” she told the publication. “And I thought, 'OK, if that's the vibe, then what's most important to me? Family.'”
