White Sox in sight: Defeat No. 112 comes as Guardians pitcher flirts with perfection

The New York Mets lost 120 games in 1962, setting the record for most losses in a single season in modern baseball history. The 2024 Chicago White Sox are on pace to overtake the Mets as the worst team of all time. As the season draws to a close, we'll be following their efforts to avoid disrepute.

CHICAGO — The White Sox, who have scored 104 fewer runs than any other team, have proven to be a cure for any pitcher in trouble. That now includes Cleveland Guardians rookie Joey Cantillo, who struck out the first 20 Chicago batters he faced on Monday, handing the White Sox their 112th loss.

Cantillo posted an 8.47 ERA in his first four spot starts, but he struck out 10 players in Cleveland's 5-3 win and kept the White Sox off the bases until Andrew Benintendi scored on a two-out single to right in the seventh inning.

Oddly enough, the White Sox have more wins against the first-place Guardians (five) than against any other opponent this season. However, their loss on Monday was their 13th straight home loss and 25th in their last 26 games at Guaranteed Rate Field. They are just eight losses away from matching the Mets' dubious 1962 record. They are 40 1/2 games out of fourth place in the five-team American League Central. — Zack Meisel

Next game: Tuesday against Cleveland. RHP Ben Lively 11-9, 4.07 ERA (Guardians) vs. RHP Jonathan Cannon 3-9, 4.53 ERA (White Sox)
