Rich Homie Quan's Family Pays Tribute to 'Beloved' Late Rapper (Exclusive)

Rich Homie Quan’s family speaks out for the first time after the rapper’s tragic death.

The hip-hop star (born Dequantes Devontay Lamar) died on September 5th at the age of 34 in Atlanta. The cause of death has not yet been determined.

In a statement shared exclusively with PEOPLE, Lamar's family spoke of their grief over his loss but vowed to ensure his legacy lives on.

“On Thursday, September 5, 2024, the Lamar family lost our beloved son, brother, father and friend. Dequantes Devontay Lamar, known to the world as Rich Homie Quan, was a proud native of the great city of Atlanta, Georgia and represented the A's as he and his music traveled this globe,” the statement said.

It continued: “Although he leaves us with an undeniable hole in our hearts, we take comfort in knowing that his music and triumphant spirit live on. Quan's legacy will forever be enshrined as the soundtrack of our lives. And for that, we are grateful. Details of the celebration will be announced shortly. Thank you all for your kind words and support during this difficult time.”

Lamar – known for hits such as “Type of Way” and “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” – was the proud father of five children: sons Devin, Royal, Khosen and Layor, and daughter Alayna.

The Fulton County coroner confirmed this, saying in a statement that he had been notified by Grady Memorial Hospital of Dequantes Devontay Lamar's death. An autopsy was performed Friday.

Lamar's cause of death is currently unknown. The medical examiner stated that “the cause and manner of death will not be determined until laboratory tests and microscopic examination of tissue samples are completed.”

Shortly after news of Lamar's death broke, the rapper received messages of condolence online from several fellow artists. Boosie, 41, wrote: “Just spoke to you BRA #tipQUAN. Never forget your smile and the way you spoke and of course your music.”

Born on October 4, 1989, the artist officially began releasing music in 2012 before landing his first major hits the following year with “Type of Way,” as well as an appearance on YG’s “My N—-” featuring Jeezy. “Type of Way” was the second single from his third mixtape Still there: Reloaded. The song reached number 50 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified gold.

He also made memorable appearances on other rappers' hits, such as “Lifestyles” with Young Thug and “Save Dat Money” with Lil Dicky and Fetty Wap.

His debut album Rich as in spiritwas released in March 2018 and reached number 32 on the Billboard 200 diagram.
