Demi Moore on aging and her role in “The Substance”

Demi Moore revealed her secret of how she can enjoy life to the fullest at 61.

“First of all, I really try to be as present in the moment as possible,” Moore said on TODAY on September 9. “And what I sense is an excitement about the possibilities. That we are defining a new, I don't want to say a generation, but We are the future for women.”

“I think about my daughters and I don't want them to ever think that it's over,” she added. “For me, this is the most exciting time of my life.”

Moore stars in the new horror film “The Substance,” which follows a former A-list celebrity who tries a black market drug that temporarily gives her a younger appearance – but later learns of its horrific side effects.

“I certainly knew it would push me out of my comfort zone and that it would pose a lot of challenges, not just physically – and there are a lot – but emotionally too, because of the level of sheer vulnerability it would require,” she explained.

“But the message that is so powerful for me is not what is happening in the surrounding circumstances, but the violence we inflict on ourselves,” she continues.

The film helped her reflect on a time in her life when she placed “great importance” on her appearance, Moore said.

“I placed a lot of importance on how my body looked because it was a crucial sign of whether I belonged or not, whether I would succeed or not, all of these things that, in turn, are a big part of the theme of the film,” she said.

“I think people have sometimes seen this as a way of dealing with what the pressures from the outside feel like… ultimately, it's the violence we experience from looking in the mirror, the comparison and the despair that makes us feel so bankrupt,” she added.

“The Substance” received a 13-minute standing ovation when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and Moore's performance is generating Oscar talk. But it's not just Moore's career that brings her joy, she said.

“My kids are grown. I have the most independence and autonomy to really redefine where I want to go. I don't know what that looks like or where it is, but I'm just happy to live in it,” Moore said.

Moore has three daughters with her ex-husband Bruce Willis: Rumer, 36, Scout, 32, and Tallulah, 30. Moore became a grandmother last year when Rumer Willis gave birth to her daughter Louetta.

“I love it. I'm Ya Ya,” Moore said, referring to the name her grandchildren call her. “And she's the sweetest.”

Moore added with a laugh: “Rumer just sent me a photo of (Louetta) with spaghetti on her head.”

“The Substance” will be released in theaters on September 20th.
