A rematch of this summer's Copa America final takes centre stage in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying on Tuesday as Argentina travel to Colombia hoping to continue their near-perfect start to qualifying.

Argentina will also end this month's matches at the top of the table of 10 South American teams with a loss, but face stiff competition from third-placed Colombia, who could push Uruguay into second place if they can close the one-point gap between them on Tuesday. A closely fought match would bear similarities to the Copa America final in July, when Argentina needed an extra-time goal to win the title for a record 16th time.

Here's what you need to know before you turn it on.

Storylines

Colombia: Their 28-game unbeaten streak may have ended in July, but Colombia have impressed throughout their run to the Copa America final and are dangerous enough to make life difficult for hosts Argentina. However, Los Cafeteros did not continue their World Cup qualifying campaign particularly strongly on Friday when they drew 1-1 with Peru. They had 70 percent possession and had more shots on goal than Peru's 16 to nine, but only managed five shots on target on an inconsistent final day that required Luis Diaz to equalize in the 82nd minute to salvage a point. Against Argentina, efficiency in attack will be key, so Diaz and James Rodriguez will be the ones to watch on Tuesday.

Argentina: The visitors will again be without Lionel Messi, who missed this month's qualifiers with an ankle injury but could make his comeback this weekend for Inter Miami. Argentina have used Messi's absence to prove again they are not a one-man team – they finished the Copa America final without him after he sustained the aforementioned ankle injury and beat Chile 3-0 on Thursday. Coach Lionel Scaloni has been able to rely on the depth of his attack in those two games, with Lautaro Martinez, Alexis Mac Allister, Julian Alvarez and Paulo Dybala back since Messi's injury. They will be expected to produce another attack-oriented performance on Tuesday, regardless of Scaloni's lineup.

forecast

It looks like these two teams are in for another hard-fought battle, but expectations are rightly high for Argentina and they have enough quality to get a good result and extend their lead at the top of the table. They can be counted on to do just that, even if Colombia make life difficult for them. Choose: Colombia 1, Argentina 2
