Fulton County records fourth inmate death in 2024 – WABE

The death of an inmate in Fulton County this week is the fourth of its kind this year, authorities said.

During a security round Monday evening at the Atlanta City Detention Center, an officer found 43-year-old inmate Michael Brandon Rivers unconscious in his cell.

Rivers was arrested by Atlanta police in early June on a warrant for failure to appear and was being held without bail.

According to the Fulton County Sheriff's Office, Atlanta police will conduct a death investigation and the Fulton County Coroner's Office will perform an autopsy on Rivers.

Rivers' death is the latest of several deaths in Fulton County correctional facilities this year.

On April 10, Louisiana resident Travis Landrey was found unconscious by authorities in the Fulton County Jail. His death was later ruled a suicide by the sheriff's office.

According to online records, Landrey had been in custody since 2022 for the car theft and murder of 57-year-old Buckhead resident Christopher Eberhart.

Earlier this month, 37-year-old Leonard Fortner, who had been held without bail in the same facility for over four months, was stabbed to death by fellow inmate Edward Cherry. The suspect used scrap metal from the prison to make the knife he used to kill Fortner.

On January 10, 36-year-old Michael Anthony Holland was found dead in his prison cell during a routine security check.

Before his death, Holland had been in custody since May 2023 on charges of grievous bodily harm to a police officer and intentionally obstructing police officers by threats or violence.
