Graniteville man arrested and tries to escape from custody

BEECH ISLAND, SC (WRDW/WAGT) – A Graniteville man attempted to escape the custody of a deputy after his arrest Sunday, according to an incident report from the Aiken County Sheriff's Office.

Larry Turner, 46, was arrested by officers after attempting to escape from custody while being assisted by hospital staff in a wheelchair.

According to officials, Turner was actively wanted by the Aiken County Sheriff's Office for armed robbery and possession of a weapon during a violent crime following an incident in December 2023.

According to the incident report, information about Turner's whereabouts was obtained during a traffic stop before the escape attempt.

Upon arrival at the Ashley Motel, 4874 Jefferson Davis Highway, officers observed a black man matching Turner's description and ordered him out of the room with his hands raised.

Officers said Turner refused to leave the room and was seen running around the room and bathroom in a panic with a woman.

Turner eventually left the room and was taken into custody without incident.

According to the accident report, Turner was unresponsive in the back seat of the patrol car.

Emergency medical services responded and administered two doses of Narcan to Turner. Turner was then taken to the emergency room for further evaluation.
