Kamala Harris shakes Donald Trump's hand at the presidential debate

Vice President Kamala Harris was the first to shake former President Donald Trump's hand during their first presidential debate on Tuesday, September 10, 2024. The debate also marked the first time the two candidates ever met.

Democratic and Republican candidates debated a wide range of campaign issues, from immigration to the economy to abortion, at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

Harris, 59, and Trump, 78, entered the stage at the same time, with Harris being the first to cross the center line between the two lecterns and extend her hand.

“Kamala Harris,” she said, shaking Trump's hand. “Let's have a good debate.”

“Nice to see you,” Trump replied, shaking her hand and adding, “Have fun.”

Trump skipped the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Harris in 2021, even though that would have been the natural time for the two to meet.

He and Biden did not shake hands during their debate on June 27. Biden was the Democratic nominee at the time before dropping out of the race on July 21 and endorsing Harris after his unstable debate performance.

Harris and Trump then engaged in a 90-minute debate moderated by ABC News' David Muir and Linsey Davis. You can read the highlights of the debate here.

The debate ended with closing remarks from all candidates and then farewells from Muir and Davis. Harris and Trump did not shake hands at the end of the debate, but left the stage when the lights were dimmed.

After the debate concluded, the Harris campaign called for a second debate. Vice presidential candidates Tim Walz and JD Vance will hold their own debate on October 1.
