September 11th Ceremonies in Northern Virginia 2024 | Headlines

A series of events are planned in Northern Virginia to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

The Prince William Board of County Supervisors is hosting a memorial service on Wednesday, September 11, at 9:30 a.m. at the 9/11 Liberty Memorial Fountain, 1 County Complex Court, Woodbridge. The public is cordially invited to attend.

The Great Falls Freedom Memorial is the scene of a ceremony Wednesday, September 11, at 7 p.m. to remember the six Great Falls residents and all others who lost their lives and suffered in the attacks and their aftermath. Keynote speaker will be Vice Admiral Lou Crenshaw, United States Navy (retired). Patriotic songs will be performed again by singer Erin Gantt. The Freedom Memorial is located behind the Great Falls Library at 9830 Georgetown Pike. The ceremony is open to all.

The Patriot Day commemoration ceremony at Fort Belvoir will take place on Wednesday, September 11, beginning at 8:30 a.m. The event's guest speaker is Homer McElroy, a retired firefighter with the Arlington County Fire Department. The ceremony will take place on the steps of the Garrison Headquarters, 9820 Flagler Road, Building 269.

Hosted by Fairfax County Fire and Emergency Services its annual 9/11 ceremony at 10 a.m. at Fire Station 40, Fairfax Center, 4621 Legato Road.

Arlington County invites the community to join neighbors, county leaders and employees, and first responders in remembering the lives lost in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and thanking those who helped that day. The county wreath laying ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 11, at the Ellen M. Bozman County Government Center. A moment of silence will be held at 9:37 a.m. when the plane struck the Pentagon, killing 184 people.

The City of Leesburg holds its Remembrance Day for September 11 on Wednesday, September 11, at 8:30 a.m. at Freedom Park, 101 Colonel Grenata Circle SE, Leesburg. There will be a brief ceremony, and the park will remain open until 9 p.m. for those who wish to visit the memorial on their own.

Alexandria will hold its 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony will be held on Wednesday, September 11, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Market Square, 301 King St., in front of City Hall. The ceremony will remember the dead, the survivors, and all those affected. The event will also pay tribute to and honor those who risked or gave their lives to save others during the incident. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held at City Hall.

Host: Stafford County its annual 9/11 Bell Ringing Ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, September 11, near the entrance to the George L. Gordon, Jr., Government Center, 1300 Courthouse Road, Stafford. The ceremony will include five tolls, a signal that traditionally marks the safe return of firefighters to the station. The bell ringing is also used at funerals of fire and emergency personnel.

The city September 11th memorial ceremony in Vienna will be held on Wednesday, September 11th at 9 a.m. Meet city leaders, American Legion Post 180 and community members on the lawn of the Freeman Store.

The National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial is temporarily closed to the public until 6 p.m. Wednesday, except for families of the victims, due to setup and teardown in support of the annual September 11th Remembrance Ceremony. Surviving family members of the victims of the attacks who wish to visit the memorial during this time are asked to contact the Pentagon Special Events Office.
