The World DanceSport Federation issued a statement on Tuesday declaring Rachael “Raygun” Gunn’s status as the world’s best breakdancer despite her elimination from the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris last month.

According to the Associated Press (h/t ESPN.com), the breakdancing governing body pointed out that the Olympics and previous Olympic qualifying competitions have no impact on the current world rankings.

Since there were no ranking-counting competitions between December 2023 and the Olympic Games, many participants' rankings are based on only a single event.

For Raygun, that event was the Oceania Continental Championship in October 2023, where she took first place.

Gunn, a 37-year-old university lecturer born in New South Wales, Australia, represented Australia at the 2024 Summer Olympics in breakdancing's Olympic debut.

Raygun became famous for her unique moves, including a kangaroo jump, but this did not lead to success in Olympic competition.

In fact, Raygun failed to score a single point in their losses against Nicka from Lithuania, Syssy from France and Logistx from the USA, which led to their elimination in the group stage.

Despite this, Raygun was one of the most talked about athletes at the Olympics, as videos of her performances were shared on social media and led to the creation of many popular memes.

Although date changes due to the Olympic Games have had a significant impact on the breakdancing world rankings, a restructuring is likely to occur in the near future.

With the Olympics now over, more ranking events are planned, starting with the Breaking for Gold World Series in Shanghai, China next month.
