Man arrested for drug trafficking after chase in Decatur

DECATUR, Alabama (WAFF) – A man was arrested following a traffic stop and chase with police in connection with drug trafficking, officials say.

According to the Morgan County Sheriff's Office, officers attempted to make a traffic stop after a vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign near 5th Avenue in Decatur.

Officials said the driver allegedly drove off the road before driving off and attempting to elude MCSO agents.

The vehicle crashed and the driver then tried to escape on foot.

Authorities said the driver was 37-year-old Paul Ray Jackson of Decatur. He was found in possession of commercial quantities of cocaine, a handgun and a large amount of U.S. dollars.

Jackson was evaluated by EMS and then transported to Decatur Morgan Hospital. He was then transported to the Morgan County Jail.

Jackson was accused of:

  • Manipulation of physical evidence
  • Dangerous Drugs-POM 2 Possession of Marijuana
  • Attempted escape from a police officer (serious crime)
  • Dangerous drugs – drug trafficking

His bail was set at $600,600.
