All the iconic style tributes and throwbacks on the red carpet of the MTV VMAs 2024 (PHOTOS)

The MTV Video Music Awards red carpet is always an opportunity to make a major statement, and we love seeing the creative ways stars try to make history on the red carpet. At the 2024 VMAs, which took place at New York City's UBS Stadium, some stars opted for stunts, others opted for see-through clothing—but these stars made major statements with throwback looks and jaw-dropping pop culture references.

From Sabrina Carpenter in Madonna's vintage Bob Mackie to Megan Thee Stallion and Tate McRae doing their best Britney, see every iconic fashion reference at the Video Music Awards.

Oops, Tate McRae has done it again! She's brought back Britney Spears' iconic minidress from the 2001 VMAs. McRae – who says it's “an honor” to be compared to the pop diva – wore a Roberto Cavalli dress over Fleur du Mal lingerie that was reminiscent of Spears' navy minidress from the year she sang “Slave 4 U” with the snake Banana.

“It was literally a miracle to find this dress,” Halsey said at the VMAs preview of her scarlet leopard dress. “The dress was designed by Gianni Versace for Elizabeth Hurley in 1996 and hasn't been worn since. From 1996 to now, and I'm just living it to the fullest. I love it.”

Lil Nas X is always a real eye-catcher on the red carpet and this otherworldly look was particularly powerful (transforming).

From her distinctive hairstyle to her bra top and baggy pants, GloRilla looked like she was chasing waterfalls in a tribute to the late TLC member (pictured with T-Boz and Chilli at the 1999 VMAs).

Paris Hilton: Herself

She may be a mother of two children and a business guru, but Paris Hilton could not possibly wear skin-tight silver chainmail and not reminds us of her party girl days in the early 2000s and her often imitated but never achieved dress for her 21st birthday.

The evening's host, Megan Thee Stallion, joked that she had taken her Olympic body from Simone Biles herself, but another gold medal-worthy double appeared on the Internet: Beyoncé's sexy look for her Olympic promo video.
