Mega Millions player wins $800 million jackpot with ticket purchased at Texas gas station

A Texas Mega Millions player has a estimated price of $800 millionaccording to the lottery game.

The player, whose identity is not yet known, was the first to get all six numbers drawn right. since June. The winning ticket was sold at a Murphy USA supermarket and gas station in Sugar Land, Texas. The player chose a Quick Pick ticket, where a computer selects the numbers.

The Winning numbers were the white balls 1, 2, 16, 24 and 66 and the golden mega ball 6.

The winner from Texas opted for a lump sum when purchasing the ticket, the Texas Lottery said in a press release. The lump sum is estimated at $404.2 million before taxes.

The player has 180 days from the drawing date to claim the prize. The retailer who sold the ticket is eligible for a $1 million bonus, the Texas Lottery said.

It is only the third Mega Millions jackpot win of 2024. Players from New Jersey gained $1.128 billion in March and a Players from Illinois took home $552 million in June.

This is the 15th Mega Millions jackpot won in Texas, according to the lottery company, and the largest lottery jackpot won in the state, according to the Texas Lottery.

The $800 million grand prize isn't the only prize awarded. Four tickets matched the five white numbers drawn. Each of those players wins the game's second prize of $1 million. Each second prize winner purchased their ticket in a different state. The winning tickets were sold in California, Florida, New York and Washington.

Another 47 players took home the game's third prize for matching four white balls and the Mega Ball. Ten of those players paid an extra dollar to add a Megaplier to their ticket, winning $40,000. The remaining 37 players each took home $10,000.

The next Mega Millions drawing will be on Friday, September 13. The prize will reset to its current starting value of $20 million, the lottery said.

Friday the 13th may seem like an unlucky day, but according to the lottery, seven Mega Millions jackpots were won that day. This includes a huge $1.348 billion in prize money won in Maine on January 13, 2023.
