Voters give Harris victory in the debate, but praise Trump's policies: They got under his skin

Fox News Digital spoke to voters across the country about their reactions to the first presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Trump.

Becky from Tennessee thought Harris won. She said the vice president “made a strong case for her policies” and “focused on the positive.” Edwin, a self-described independent from Florida, also said Harris won the debate. He said she was “calm and collected” and that Trump was “typical Trump” who “just repeats what he's been repeating for years.”

“I'm torn between the two, but I think Harris won because she stayed calm,” Edwin said. “I like Trump's politics because when he was president the first time, everything was much more low-key. I thought if he behaved in a more presidential way, his message would come across much better than now, when there's more of a bit of chaos.”

Carolyn of Arlington, Virginia, thought Harris was “ahead of her time,” but when asked if she was better off financially today than she was four years ago, she replied “no.”

“The situation is very bad. You know, the economy is out of control, I think. But she has a plan and I think it was good that she presented it,” Carolyn said, adding that she would trust Harris more than Trump to fix the economy.

Mina, from Houston, Texas, said she had been supporting Harris before the debate and thought she would win because of her “ability to form coherent sentences.” Alex, from the California Bay Area, said Harris “exceeded expectations” and Trump “wasn't that good.” However, he accused the moderators of the ABC News debate of being “pretty biased” against Trump.

“They checked his facts thoroughly, but not hers, not once,” Alex said.

Sherry, a Trump supporter who splits her time between her homes in California and Michigan, admitted she believes the former president did not win the debate.

“I'm just sorry Trump couldn't do better,” Sherry told Fox News Digital. “I love Trump. I'm going to vote for him. I wasn't convinced. But he was out of form and he really pressed her. And I'm sorry he didn't say what he wanted to accomplish.”

Tamara from Washington DC, who has more faith in Trump to handle economic issues than Harris, told Fox News Digital that Harris had “accomplished what she set out to do,” which was “to get under Trump's skin.”

“Kamala really provoked Trump and spent most of her time not addressing some of the issues,” Tamara said. “But I thought she definitely led the debate better than Trump last night.”

Thomas of Michigan, on the other hand, believed that Trump won the debate because he presented “solid” policies.

“At the end of the day, people want to be safe… people want their children to be safe. They don't want anyone breaking into their homes. They want the bare necessities,” Thomas said.

Kenneth from Houston also gave the former president credit for the victory, saying Harris was “not so great with her answers.”

“She seemed clueless on a lot of issues,” Kenneth told Fox News Digital. “I think Trump has taken this country to the peak of its economy. And he was very influential last night.”

Gina, from Michigan, did not believe there was a winner in Tuesday's debate. She said there were “unanswered questions on both sides,” but praised Trump for being “more direct” with voters and for not being “afraid to call a spade a spade.”

Voters were divided on whether more debates between Trump and Harris were necessary: some said they would like to hear more political discussions and would even watch the shows for their “entertainment value,” while others said they had already decided who they would vote for in November.

“I think they should dig deeper on some of the issues,” said Kriston of Tennessee, who told Fox News Digital she was leaning toward Harris after the first debate.

“Personally, I don't think it's necessary. For others, maybe, but I hope that if it's necessary, they would go into more detail on the policy details that they haven't gone into so far,” Elbert said from Washington DC.
