Pac-12 expected to announce the addition of four Mountain West schools as part of the latest conference realignment

The Pac-12 Conference will announce the new additions: Boise State, State of Fresno, State of San DiegoAnd State of Colorado from the Mountain West at around 9 a.m. ET, according to On3's Pete Nakos.

This is the latest step in the conference's realignment of college sports and comes after the Pac-12 Conference entered the 2024 season with just two schools. The 10 other previous member schools moved to either the Big Ten, Big 12 or ACC before the 2024-2025 academic year.

FBS conferences must include eight teams. The Pac-12 will have six schools with these new additions and must add two more programs before the 2026-27 school year.

The Pac-12 and the Mountain West entered into a two-year agreement after it became clear that the Pac-12 would be reduced to two member schools for a period of time. In this agreement, each Mountain West school would play either State of Oregon or State of Washington to help these schools fill their schedules at short notice.

The four schools leaving the conference will have to pay a severance package of about $18 million. In addition, each school leaving the Mountain West will be fined between $10 million and $12 million as a result of the agreement. However, the Pac-12 is reportedly helping with those exit fees.

The two conferences had also discussed an extension of the timetable agreement, but the talks recently failed.

The realignment of the conference originally came after the Big Ten responded to the SEC’s addition of new schools by USC And University of California. At this time, then Commissioner George Kliavkoff struggled to negotiate a media rights deal that members could agree on and presented a streaming deal from Apple. At that point, the schools began looking elsewhere for new locations, leaving Washington State and Oregon State behind.

From here new commissioner Teresa Gould There is still a lot of work to be done to restore the conference. The Pac-12 needs to add at least two more schools to get to eight by the 2026-2027 year, but this was a good first step for them as they look to rebuild the conference.
