City leaders urge drivers to stay where they are during severe weather

The city of Birmingham is urging drivers to avoid the roads in case of severe flooding. Rick Journey, director of communications, says the city is prepared should Francine bring flooding to central Alabama. “The city does regular maintenance – weekly – on our storm drainage areas, making sure there are no blockages or anything like that, that's just a typical weekly job for the public works department,” Journey explained. Neighboring cities also say they are prepared. Homewood says private contractors are working to prevent flooding before the storm arrives. A Vestavia Hills spokesperson says they are not expecting much rainfall and are not doing anything special. Back in Birmingham, Journey says the city plans to keep people safe as much as it can. “Messer Airport Road between the 3100 and 3300 blocks of Messer Airport is a flood-prone area, so the Department of Transportation will be closing that section of the road after rush hour tonight as a precaution,” Journey explained. Journey stresses that the best way to protect yourself is to stay informed. “Use common sense and follow what your meteorologist is telling your audience. Follow their weather forecasts and be smart,” Journey explained.
