Gas leak leads to evacuation of a primary school

PRATT, W.Va. (WSAZ) – A gas leak forced an elementary school to be evacuated late Thursday morning.

Metro 911 reported that Pratt Elementary School was being evacuated due to the gas leak.

Kanawha County Emergency Management Director CW Sigman told WSAZ that the gas leak occurred behind the school and that the evacuation was done out of an abundance of caution.

Pratt Mayor Andy Williams said students were being held 100 yards from the school and that the gas company was on site to fix the problem. He said the leak started when a private contractor working to replace a 100-year-old sewer line hit the gas line.

Kanawha County Schools officials say the school day at Pratt Elementary ends at 1 p.m. and that all students are OK.

Pratts Fire Department and Police are on scene.
