Man charged with murder after shooting in Brentwood front yard: DA

BRENTWOOD, NY — A Brentwood man was charged with murder Thursday, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced.

Romero Campbell, 23, aka Romeo, of Brentwood, has been charged with joint murder after allegedly killing Joshua Jasmin, 29, of Brentwood, during a verbal argument in August, the district attorney said.

According to the investigation, Campbell and Jasmin were allegedly involved in a verbal argument on the lawn in front of Campbell's Brentwood home on Charter Oaks Avenue around 6 p.m. on August 30, the district attorney said.

During the argument, Campbell fired two shots from a shotgun, hitting Jasmin in the upper body, causing her to fall to the ground, prosecutors said.

When Suffolk County police officers arrived at the scene, they found Jasmin without a pulse and
He was lying on the street without a shirt and had numerous gunshot wounds to his upper body, the prosecutor said.

Jasmin was later pronounced dead at South Shore University Hospital, the prosecutor said.

According to the prosecutor, a witness stated that Jasmin was unarmed. The police officer's body camera footage supported the witness's statement that Jasmin was unarmed.

After police found Jasmin's body upon arrival, they searched the property on Charter Oaks Avenue and found a shotgun in a kitchen doorway while a shotgun shell casing lay on the floor next to it, the prosecutor said.

Police saw Campbell standing nearby and, after further investigation, identified him as the suspected shooter and took him into custody, the prosecutor said.

The argument and shooting were recorded on video surveillance on a neighboring property, the prosecutor said. Jasmin could also be heard on the video calling the shooter “Rome.”

On Thursday, Campbell was arraigned before Acting Superior Court Judge Karen M. Wilutis and charged with first-degree murder, a Class A felony, the district attorney said.

Judge Wilutis ordered Campbell to be remanded in custody, the prosecutor said. He is due back in court on October 16, 2024. If convicted of the main charge, he faces 25 years to life in prison, the prosecutor said.

“The charges describe a tragic and senseless act of violence,” Tierney said. “We will fight with all our might to seek justice for Joshua and his family.”

Campbell is represented by George Duncan. He was not immediately available for comment.
