One dead after burglary, crash and shooting in New Britain: officials – NBC Connecticut

According to police, one person died Thursday morning in New Britain following a burglary, an accident and an altercation in which shots were fired. Investigators believe the incidents are related.

New Britain Police said that at approximately 8:52 a.m. there was a burglary in the Kelsey Street area, an accident in the area and an altercation during which shots were fired.

One man died, police said. The mayor's office later identified the victim as 25-year-old Dante Malcom Sprouse of New Britain.

The shooting occurred around the time children were starting school, and Smith Elementary School and Roosevelt Early Learning Center were placed into shelter-in-place orders due to their proximity.

The investigation is ongoing, but police said no one has been arrested yet.

At Smith Elementary School and the Roosevelt campus in New Britain, students were in emergency shelter after an accident and shooting occurred in the neighborhood.

Police said there was no apparent danger to the public and that an investigation was underway.

Police cordoned off some streets in the area and deployed police dogs and a drone.

Representatives of the school administration announced that normal classes had resumed at both schools.
