Granddaughter of elderly couple killed in their Fort Lauderdale home arrested in connection with murder, police say – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (WSVN) – The granddaughter of Major and Claudette Melvin has been arrested in connection with the March murders of the elderly couple at their Fort Lauderdale home, police said.

The arrest of 38-year-old Jalisa Hill came after her ex-boyfriend Maurice Newson was previously charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

Newson, who was linked to the theft of the Melvins' red Ford Fusion, was taken into custody in May and charged with murder in July.

Surveillance footage allegedly showed a dark sedan parked in front of the Melvins' home around the time of their deaths and that the driver later stole the vehicle.

Newson was identified through cell phone records and by a tow truck driver who purchased the stolen car.

Hill, who initially denied taking a lie detector test, was linked to the case through further investigation.

According to police, she had lived in the Melvins' house and had plans to renovate the property.

According to Fort Lauderdale police, “it is believed that she worked with Maurice Newson to murder her grandparents.”

Fort Lauderdale police arrested Hill on Thursday and are charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
