“Karate Kid” star Chad McQueen, son of Steve McQueen, dies at 63

Fans of the “Karate Kid” series have lost a popular character.

Actor Chad McQueen, the only son of the late Hollywood icon Steve McQueen and perhaps best known for his portrayal of the character Dutch in the “Karate Kid” films, has died. He was 63.

TMZ was the first media outlet to report the news.

McQueen died on Wednesday, September 11, at his home in Palm Desert, California, according to his longtime attorney Arthur Barens, who spoke to the outlet.

Barens said McQueen's cause of death was organ failure. McQueen reportedly sustained an injury several years ago that ultimately led to progressive organ failure, according to TMZ.

The outlet added that McQueen was surrounded by his children, his partner and Barens at the time of his death.

The news was confirmed by McQueen's wife Jeanie, daughter Madison and son Chase in a statement posted on Instagram.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, Chad McQueen,” the family wrote under two black-and-white photos shared on Chad and Steve McQueen's Instagram accounts.

“His remarkable journey as a loving father to us and his unwavering devotion to our mother truly exemplified a life of love and dedication. His passion for racing not only highlighted his extraordinary talent, but was also a way of honoring his father's legacy, a testament to the values ​​instilled in him.”

“He passed on his passion, knowledge and dedication to us and we will carry on not only his legacy but that of our grandfathers,” the statement continued. “As a family, we must navigate this difficult time and politely request privacy as we remember and celebrate his extraordinary life.”

The post is signed “With heartfelt gratitude, Jeanie, Chase and Madison.”

In addition to his role as Dutch in “The Karate Kid” (1984) and its sequel “The Karate Kid II” (1986), McQueen was also known for his role in the film “Firepower” (1993).

A passionate protector of his father's legacy, McQueen produced two documentaries about the Hollywood legend: “I Am Steve McQueen” (2014) and “Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans” (2015).
