Video shows student being kicked in Palm Beach County school brawl – NBC 6 South Florida

A video shows a violent fight at a middle school that prompted a mother to pull her son out of school and demand answers from Palm Beach County school officials.

It happened on August 29, when Jairishiela Gomez said her son, a seventh-grader at John F. Kennedy Middle School in Riviera Beach, was attacked by another student as he walked down the stairs.

The footage shows the seventh-grader being dragged down the stairs and as he lies on the ground, the other student kicks him in the head. Gomez's son stands up and holds his head.

“He broke his braces. He hit him more than 15 times, kicked him in the head once and threw him down a flight of stairs onto the concrete,” she said.

She noticed that her son was acting differently when he came home and that he was visibly hurt, NBC affiliate WPTV reported. Gomez received the video hours later from another parent.

“I saw the video and thought, this is terrible,” she said through tears.

Her son told her that he had been beaten up by another student. But there was no news from the school for days, she said.

On September 3, the assistant principal approached Gomez about the violence and informed her that the other student had been suspended from school for a week.

And according to Gomez, her son and the other student had been arguing since the week before, when the assistant principal also told her they would push for mediation. But that never happened, she said.

WPTV spoke to Gomez's son. He said the argument started when the other student ripped his school ID from his neck.

Gomez said her son suffers from ADHD and it is not the first time he has been bullied.

“I just need answers because this can't go on like this,” she said. “My son can't even sleep.”

In a statement, the Palm Beach County School District said, “This matter is under investigation. The school district is committed to providing a safe learning and working environment for all students and staff. This includes having a school counselor and behavioral health professional available to students on each campus. Students who violate the district's code of conduct will face disciplinary action if they violate school safety.”

Gomez's son no longer attends John F. Kennedy Middle School and she has started a GoFundMe campaign to find therapy for him.
