Krispy Kreme and Wendy's offer free gifts

Friday the 13th is commonly known as the universally unlucky day.

However, some companies are hoping to bring a sense of luck to their customers this year by offering special deals and discounts on this spooky date, which occurs at least once a year.

If you are superstitious and fear this day, both Krispy Kreme and Wendy's have offers to take away your fears.

Here you can find out everything you need to know about the free gifts and how to get them.

Krispy Kreme offer: Donuts for 13 cents

Krispy Kreme is offering customers a dozen Original Glazed Doughnuts for just 13 cents with the purchase of any dozen or 16-minis at regular price, the company told USA TODAY.

Offer valid Friday at participating stores with a limit of one dozen per customer in-store and on online orders for pickup or delivery through the Krispy Kreme app and website with promo code “13.”

Wendy's: Free fries

Wendy's is offering members of the Wendy's Rewards program free hot and crispy fries in any size with any purchase in the app. Through the end of the month, customers can also get a small Frosty for $1.

How did Friday the 13th get its unlucky reputation?

According to National Geographic Kids, the exact origin of Friday the 13th as an unlucky day is unknown, but “it probably originates from the Christian religion.”

“In the Bible, for example, Judas – a person who is said to have betrayed Jesus – was the 13th guest at the Last Supper. Also, many unfortunate things happened on Fridays in the Bible,” says National Geographic Kids.
