Driver cannot remember moments before crash with serious injuries, Las Vegas police say

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (FOX5) – FOX5 has received a police report of a man accused of driving under the influence of alcohol and causing a multi-vehicle crash.

The accident occurred on Monday at around 10:44 p.m. at the intersection of Boulder Highway and Desert Inn.

Carlos Adan Alvarez, 36, is accused of driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding and running a red light. He was driving a Ford F-150.

According to police, Alvarez was speeding south on Lamb Boulevard, ran a red light and struck an Elantra traveling south on Boulder Highway.

The two occupants of the Elantra sustained serious injuries and are being treated at Sunrise Hospital. When the Elantra was struck, the vehicle struck other cars that were stopped at a red light in the eastbound lanes of Desert Inn.

A total of five people were hospitalized that night.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the pickup truck lying on its side. According to a report, officers rescued Alvarez from the vehicle.

Officers noticed a strong odor of “a substance” coming from Alvarez's body and breath. He also had bloodshot, watery eyes.

During an interview with officers, Alvarez told police he had stopped drinking because he was taking medication. He also admitted to police that he did not remember the moments driving to the intersection and the accident.

According to the report, he refused a blood test. Due to injuries to his wrist and ankle, no further tests could be done. He was taken to Sunrise Hospital for treatment and was scheduled to be taken to the Clark County Detention Center.

He is accused of reckless driving resulting in death or serious bodily harm, driving under the influence of alcohol and ignoring a red light.

He is due back in court on January 14 at 8 a.m. He has not posted bail, according to court records.
