12 years in prison for woman who pleaded guilty in drug case

A Tom Green County jury found Brandy Dawn Todd guilty and sentenced her to prison.

TOM GREEN COUNTY, Texas – An Odessa woman was sentenced to 12 years in prison by a Tom Green County jury after pleading guilty to possession of a controlled substance (4 to 200 grams) with intent to distribute.

In a press release, the office of 119th District Attorney John Best said that on December 21, 2023, a pickup truck driven by Brandy Dawn Todd was stopped by Texas Highway Patrol Officers Alejandro Morante and Colton Wilson during a routine traffic stop for speeding. Morante noticed syringes in the truck containing a substance he believed to be liquid methamphetamine. He searched the pickup truck and found marijuana, Xanax, the syringes, and a pink notebook with a drug log.

When Todd was searched, Wilson found 196 grams of methamphetamine hidden in the leg of her pants.

After Todd pleaded guilty to the charge, she decided that the jury should decide her sentence. During the trial, the state presented evidence related to Todd's other pending charges of methamphetamine possession in Williamson County and smuggling undocumented immigrants in Kinney County.

In the press release, Best's office said, “Methamphetamine continues to be a scourge for our community and is the cause of the majority of the crimes we handle in our office. Our office is committed to working closely with all of our law enforcement agencies to aggressively pursue and hold drug traffickers accountable. As this case demonstrates, our community also has no tolerance for drug traffickers. We want to thank the jury for their service and commend the Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol for their fine work and thorough investigation of this case.”

In addition to the twelve years in prison, the jury fined Todd $10,000.
