1 student hospitalized after incident in science class at Nashville high school

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – At least one student was taken to a hospital Thursday morning following an incident involving a gas valve at a Nashville high school.

A spokesperson for Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) said the incident occurred in a classroom at James Lawson High School.

“Gas was released from a valve in a science classroom and was confined to the room,” said an MNPS spokesman.

According to reports, Nashville Fire Department (NFD) crews arrived at the school and evaluated students who were in the classroom. At least one student was taken to the hospital for further evaluation, but there were no serious injuries.

Officials said there were reports of an odor in the building after a gas company released a small amount of gas outside the building, but NFD teams and the company confirmed that “no detectable amounts were found inside.”

A spokesperson for MNPS said the principal of James Lawson High School sent an email to parents Thursday morning informing them of the incident and also reached out to the parents of the students directly involved.

No further information was immediately released.
