Netflix no longer works on Apple devices with iOS 16

Before the release of iOS 18, Netflix seems to be planning to stop supporting old iOS and iPadOS versions. According to MacRumors' contributor Aaron Perris, code strings in the latest iOS update for the Netflix app show that the popular streaming service will soon stop supporting iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 devices.

Since there are hidden strings in the latest update, it seems that this change could happen as early as next week, as iOS 18 is expected to be available to iPhone users on September 16.

When Apple released iOS 17 a year ago, it ended support for some iPhone and iPad models. So if you own one of the following Apple devices, you will soon no longer be able to use Netflix:

  • iPhone8
  • iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone7
  • iPad Pro (1st generation)
  • iPad (5th generation)

Fortunately, once Netflix stops supporting these devices, other iPhone and iPad models will be able to continue working with the streaming service, as iOS 17 and iOS 18 support the same iPhone models.

However, iPadOS 18 also excludes some other iPads, such as the iPad Pro 2 and iPad 6, so they may no longer work with Netflix in the future.

While some users may be upset about this change, it's important to note that apps generally need to stop supporting older versions of a system in order to improve security and even add new features that are only available on newer models.

A workaround for these devices may be to use Netflix in Safari or other web browsers. At some point, it won't even be possible to access it through a browser, but it will at least buy users a few more years without having to upgrade their iPhone and iPad models.

The same thing happens with WhatsApp and other popular apps. With that in mind, it's always a good idea to update your devices at least every now and then.
